Brady continues telling his story:

  • It happened over a year ago.
  • Starts with what happened 6 months ago in the spring:
    • Characters:
      • Cousin Carl: drives ambulance and transports Brady and his friends to and from school.
      • JT lives next door to Brady, on his family's chicken farm.
        • waits for bus with Brady
        • path between houses worn down because back and forth a lot.
      • Digger lives across the road, not too far.
        • Digger says can't go to Brady's because has to help his old man haul gravel. Brady feels bad for Digger on account of his family.
      • Brady:
        • Dad is a waterman half the year, a boat carpenter the other half.
        • Even though crabbing season...making more money as a carpenter now that crabs were getting scarce.
        • State gov. cut Dad's workday from 14 hours to 8. Hurt family economically.
        • Dad says crabs scarce because of pollution and condo development.
        • Scientist who came to Brady's school said it is because of over-fishing the bay and pollution.
        • Ben: neighbor
        • Mrs. DiAngelo Neighbor
        • Marcellus DiAngelo (the Italian Stallion, obsessed with physical fitness) neighbor
    • In driveway waiting for carl...parkas cause it was chilly.
    • Brady uncomfortable with how Digger talks to JT
    • Digger was in one of his moods
      • Says: "Some people have too much money for their own damn good."
    • Brady says, page 9, If the weather didn't look so bad, I'd say come on over...take a little spin down the river.
    • Oxymorons: ex. found missing
    • Boys on dock...see red kayak (page 10)
      • Digger identifies person in the canoe as the Italian Stallion
      • Pretends to call out, "paddlehard, you sucker!"
      • Digger and JT exchange looks a laugh
      • Brady says he shouldn't be going out there today.
        • spring tides are strong
        • doubts that Mr. DiAngelo knew dangers since he had only had the kayak a few weeks.
        • Brady wants to yell something.
        • JT says he's too far away and won't hear
        • Digger says why should we?
          • Digger says if he is stupid enough to be out there today, he can take what's coming. Besides, he deserves it.
        • Brady says water is damn cold
          • Pg. 11 Water is damn cold
          • It was the middle of April
          • water temperature wasn't even 50 degree yet.
          • Exposure...if he fell in, he could die in, like, 20 minutes
        • Digger says
          • Exactly
        • Brady wants to yell something , but didn't.(peer pressure?)
          • realizes how angry Digger had packed inside.
          • because the DiAngelos bought the grandfather's farm, tore down the old house, and build a mansion.
          • boys booted off property for smoking.
        • Digger felt boys were just hanging out under "our" cliff, where we hung out a million times over the last 13 years.
        • Brady did feel some of Digger's frustration
        • Brady can't understand:
          • how can Digger be so callous that morning...if he is stupid enough to be out there, he can take what is coming...
          • How can Digger and JT be so blind to the awful possiblilities?
          • Even after Brady reminded them...he could die in 20 minutes...We ought to yell something...
          • When exactly would they feel shamed by it?
          • It always shamed Brady.
